Road Trip Results in 1-3 Weekend for Saints’ Hardballers

The Presentation College Saints baseball team earned a split tonight to open a four game series against the University of Northwestern (UNW).  UNW would strike first with a 15-3 victory in game one before the Saints would win game two 4-3 in an extra innings dog fight to close the nightcap.

Game 1: Presentation 3, University of Northwestern 15

The two teams traded runs back and forth for the first three innings as the Saints would jump out to an early 3-2 going into the third inning but UNW would answer back scoring two in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead that they would never give up.

Henry Waage (W, 2-0) threw a complete game for UNW while giving up four hits, three runs, one earned, and striking out two batters.

The Eagles would make the most of an 11 run sixth inning as the Saints struggled on the mound issuing too many walks, a costly PC error, and one long ball from Ryan Sutterer.

UNW was led offensively by Ryan Sutterer as he was 3-for-4 with a homerun and five RBI’s.  Braxton Lindow would follow with a 2-for-4 performance with a double and one RBI.  Five other Eagles added one hit as the team tallied 10 hits total for the game.

James Lewis (L, 0-2) suffered the loss for the Saints as he tossed 5.0 innings giving up seven hits, four earned runs, and struck out four batters.

Johnnie Morris led the way offensively for PC as he went 2-for-2 with one RBI.  Cameron Guevara and Bailey Schahn also has one hit on the day.

Game 2: Presentation 4, University of Northwestern 3

A strong combined pitching performance from Connor Perry, Ryan Barker, and Alex Lunneborg would set the pace for the Saints on their way to a 4-3 victory.  Perry would get called to start for PC as he tossed 5.0 strong innings giving up five hits, only two earned runs while striking out.  The runs that Perry gave up came in the first inning before he settled in and threw four scoreless innings.  Ryan Barker tossed a scoreless sixth inning while striking out one batter to help keep the Saints in the game.  Alex Lunneborg (W, 1-1) picked up the win as he threw 2.0 innings of scoreless baseball while striking out one.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning before the Saints offense chipped away scoring a run in third, sixth, and seventh.  Josh Tabor ripped a double to deep left field in the seventh that drove in Cameron Guevara to tie the ball game 3-3.  In extra innings PC pushed across the winning run after Zane Hunt reached base on a walk, he would advance to second on a wild pitch, and then to third base after Johnnie Morris laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Josh Youngchild delivered with a clutch sacrifice fly to deep right field that would plate Hunt and proved to the deciding run.

Josh Tabor, Dryden Kaczmar, and Zane Hunt all had two hits a piece setting the tone for the Saints offense.  Josh Youngchild led the way with a team high two RBI’s.


The Presentation College baseball team dropped the final two games of the double-header with the University of Northwestern (MN) today from St. Paul. The Saints lost game one 2-1 and game two by a score of 11-1. After the two-day double-header weekend with the Eagles, the Saints fall to 7-15 on the year.

Game One: Presentation College 1, University of Northwestern (MN) 2

The two teams went scoreless until Northwestern got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. The Eagles’ Reinhart tripled to right center to start off the inning and teammate Ehnstrom followed up with an RBI single to right field to give them a 1-0 lead over the Saints.

It wasn’t until the top of the sixth inning until the Saints got on the scoreboard themselves. Josh Tabor (SO/Missoula, MT) would reach first on an error by the third baseman and would advance into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt by Bailey Schahn (JR/Show Low, AZ). Dryden Kaczmar (FR/Regina, SK, CAN) would follow-up with a double to bring home Tabor to even the score at 1-1. UNW would respond back as UNW’s Osborn drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win over the Saints by a final score of 2-1.

Jake Bunjovac (SR/Peoria, AZ) would suffer the loss for the Saints as he threw for 6.1 innings while giving up seven hits and two earned runs in 25 batters faced. Bunjovac struck out four Eagles in the loss.

Josh Youngchild (SR/Gig Harbor, WA) (2-for-3) and Dryden Kaczmar (2-for-2) led the Saints from the plate in the loss. Kaczmar also recorded the only RBI in the game as he drove in Josh Tabor in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Game Two: Presentation College 1, University of Northwestern (MN) 11

Early big-run innings continue to haunt the Saints as UNW knocked in six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 6-0 lead. The Eagles would continue to add to the lead as they notched in three more runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to give them a commanding 9-0 lead heading into the sixth inning. The Saints finally got something going in the top of the sixth when Jace Wyatt (SO/Show Low, AZ) knocked in Austin Crain (FR/Duarte, CA) off a single to put the Saints on the board. However, the one run was not enough as the Eagles responded with another run in the bottom of the sixth and held off any offensive threat from the Saints in the final inning of play to give them the 11-1 win and the sweep.

Giovanni Arieta (JR/Sanremo, Italy) would record the loss for the Saints after three innings pitched while suffering seven runs (four earned), eight hits, and two walks.

A total of 15 Saints batted in the loss with Jace Wyatt leading the way at the plate by going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Saints will open up conference play next weekend as they host Dickinson State University on March 25th/26th. The double-headers are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
