Brown County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of phone scam

ABERDEEN, S.D. (HubCityRadio.com) – Local residents are being targeted in a phone scam, according to Tom Schmitt, Chief Deputy with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.

Schmitt said the scam deals with jury duty and is designed to take people’s money.

Schmitt called the scammers “despicable.”

Schmitt said the best way to know that it is not a legit call from law enforcement is because the caller asks for money or gift cards.

He said the best way to handle the situation is to call the Sheriff’s Office if you have any questions or concerns.

Schmitt said the elderly are probably at most risk of the scam.
